Department Profile:

The department (www.comm.msstate.edu) is one of the largest on campus. Approximately 575 majors are in concentrations of Broadcast & Digital Journalism, Communication Studies, Print & Digital Journalism, Public Relations, and Theatre. Students may choose concentrations in more than one area, and minors are offered in each concentration.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The primary professional responsibilities of this instructional faculty member are teaching undergraduate courses in Technical Theatre, Intro to Theatre, and others areas as needed by the program. Duties include technical direction and mentoring of technical direction students for the production season. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, serving as the Technical Director for the North Mississippi High School Drama Festival and Facility Coordination of the theatre and production facilities. The position will teach a 12-hour course equivalent per semester. Service to the department, university, and profession is expected. Service for this position includes serving on committees. Service activities within the community and professional discipline are also recognized as aspects of faculty achievement

Minimum Qualifications:

MA with 18 hours of graduate level coursework in Technical Theatre and/or Design, 4 years minimum experience serving as a Technical Director.

Preferred Qualifications:

Collegiate-level teaching and professional experience are preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

The successful candidate must have a thorough knowledge of the field and a willingness to participate collegially in a broad department. Colleagues must be able to communicate that knowledge in the classroom and performance/production environment to students as well as to other important groups through scholarship and service.

Specialized skills requires include: proficient with CAD software (AutoCAD or Vectorworks), and experience with best practices in theatrical rigging and scenic construction.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

The successful candidates must be able to teach in a classroom setting and provide service in the profession.

Comfortable working at heights, and ability to lift 50 lbs and work in confined quarters.
