The Department of Theatre and Dance consists of 33 faculty and staff members covering Dance, Theatre Performance, Musical Theatre Performance, Theatre Direction, Arts Management, Costume Design and Technology, Scenic Design, Lighting Design, Technical Direction, Stage Management, and associated areas offering BA, BFA, and MFA degrees. Design and Technical Production area includes individual faculty in Scenic Design, Lighting/Sound/Projection Design, Production Management, this Technical Direction position, and a staff Scene Shop Supervisor.
The Department of Theatre and Dance has approximately 360 students, where 40 are MFA students in Theatre Performance, Management, Directing, Design, or Technical Production. There are approximately 165 undergraduate Dance majors. There are approximately 155 Theatre majors. This includes approximately 50 students studying Musical Theatre and approximately 30 students studying Design and Technical Production. The remaining undergraduate students are in Theatre Performance.
Each year the Department of Theatre and Dance produces three mainstage theatrical productions, four studio theatrical productions, four mainstage dance productions, and one offsite summer production. There are also other miscellaneous productions that are produced externally by student groups.
The Department of Theatre and Dance at The University of Alabama operates a total of three theatres. The Gallaway Theatre is a 305-seat proscenium space with double-purchase fly system, primarily used for mainstage theatre productions. Morgan Auditorium is a 622-seat proscenium space primarily used for mainstage dance productions. The Allen Bales Theatre is a 149-seat three-quarter thrust, studio style space primarily used for MFA Directing student theatre productions. Primary shops are offsite and include professional style power tools, pneumatic tools, cordless tools, and multi-station MIG welding capabilities.
